2022 Dedication of Marker in Honor of Alice Boarman Baldridge
To read more about Alice, please see the post by Historic Huntsville: https://www.historichuntsville.org/why-are-we-recognizing-alice-boarman-baldridge/. TTC joined the Historic Huntsville Foundation yesterday in dedicating the marker for Alice Boarman Baldridge. The marker is located at 703 Adams Street. Honorary Regent Sue Shaver and her husband, John, donated the funds to create the marker. This year we recognized Alice as a Woman in History but we didn't know she had relatives here. We gave her great-granddaughter Alicia Anderson and her great-great-granddaughter Allie Craig certificates and medals in honor of Alice.
2022 October Teacher Appreciation Brunch at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary
Our members supplement the teachers on topics of American history, the Constitution, and reading with the children. We also support the teachers by showing them our appreciation.
2022 October Weeden House Service
Twickenham Town Chapter has a long history with the Weeden House. The home was built in 1819 and is now operated as the Weeden House Museum and Garden. Dr. William Weeden bought the house in 1845. His daughter, Maria Howard Weeden (who went by the name Howard Weeden), was a noted painter of African Americans and poet. Members helped Gina James, the museum director, with various projects.
2022 October National Day of Service
At our October 2022 meeting we celebrated our National Day of Service, the NSDAR's birthday! For our service project we brought in supplies to fill pink comfort bags to assist women who are being treated for breast cancer. We also reenacted our first meeting where we organized Twickenham Town Chapter, the founding of NSDAR, and the SAR's efforts to allow women to join.
2022 October Naturalization Ceremony
Americanism Chair Ann Coffey, Kathy Rains, Sue Shaver, and Penny Sumners left Huntsville around 5 am to travel to Montgomery for the naturalization ceremony for twenty of our newest United States of America citizens! They joined Montgomery-area Daughters in presenting flag pins and hand-held flags to our new citizens who were originally from South Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Mexico, and Burma. Judge Watkins shared that the happiest event in a state court is the adoption of a child while the happiest event in a federal court is an adoption of sorts through the oath of citizenship. Judge Watkins also told the “accidental citizens” among us (those blessed to be born here) to understand that liberty should be one of our most prized possessions and not one to be taken for granted. Very moving!

The exhibit illustrated white and Black women who made a difference in the role of women in Alabama. In addition, HHF commissioned art works inspired by the women who are highlighted.
2022 August, Meeting of the Districts
Twickenham Town Chapter sent 11 members to the Meeting of the Districts. The MoD is a conference where all the regional districts send their chapters to meet. We learned about changes in NSDAR leadership, about activities of the Alabama Society of DAR and what to expect from them, and from workshops on how to perform our roles as regent, historian, treasurer, etc. We were fortunate to have an archivist from the Georgia Archives give a well-presented lecture on Georgia genealogy research.
2022 August Tea at the Gideon Blackburn House, First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville
We enjoyed our first August Membership Tea since the Covid pandemic began. Our founding Regent, Sarah Strothers Robins Tappey, held Twickenham Town Chapter's organizing meeting in 1908 at the First Presbyterian Church's manse. The manse is long gone now but the Gideon Blackburn House is owned by the Church. It is a lovely setting with a beautiful foyer, living and sitting rooms, and dining room.
